The CXQ5 DVD (CLASSIC EPISODES #124 1-15-1999) is now available through the Whalebone Productions online store. This professionally produced DVD affords the viewer with an inspiring and historical slice of Seattle's vibrant music scene; here captured are CXQ5 "as it happened" one January night, early in 1999. As always Whalebone Productions Classic Episodes, include the punchy 29 Live, open montage and feast for ears and eyes.
Having played music with two of the members of CXQ5; Tim Thomas (Quisp) and Michael Robson (Pink Purple, Quisp, Whores of Babylon); I can speak with authority about the music and members of CXQ5 (whom, I should say at the outset, are three of the finest musicians Seattle has ever produced). "That's All Right" opens the performance, and the trio, rounded out here, with the masterful, deft, bass work, performed by Rob Windham (Phonkbutt), waste no time in nailing the first song, that segues seamlessly, into the hit, "CXQ5". For the span of a few years, I heard CXQ5 on the air, and it seemed they were on their way, as it is evident Tim Thomas is a master at crafting pop-rock anthems. His tunes break out of the box of the predictable pop progression, as does his fictional character, CXQ5.
His lyrics hit at classic grunge days as well, and "The Way" sports some great bass riffs, by Windham. The anchor of course, in this trio, is Robson, on the kit. Only on the fade out does Robson break character and smile, sort of like if the camera finally cornered Charlie Watts, and made him smile. The band's execution of the 8 or so songs, is scary tight, and this DVD, which includes, as well, "Magic Penny" and "Never Been Easy", should be in anyone's collection, interested in the great other bands, from the dynastic days of Seattle.
As always the production, camera and sound work by the 29 Live Staff and Crew appear flawless, and the team, once again here captures "Live" a true Seattle treasure, the music of Tim Thomas, and CXQ5.
